The artistic research

The work of Vala T. Foltyn revolves around the notions of queering the archives, the history of witchcraft, and a critical analysis of religion and Catholic iconography. The research is grounded in a case study of a century-old villa in Kraków, Poland - a site that holds visual archives tracing the history of female resistance fighters from the Second World War.

During the residency Foltyn will revisit archives from past projects and rework their choreographic patterns into an installation project, where words, movement, and textiles create new constellations. The focus will be on creating patterns inspired by spiritual and art practices.

Foltyn will be working alone in the studio during the first residency week, which took place in January. During the second week which takes place in May, Foltyn will be joined by Sandy Harry Ceesay, Andreas Haglund and Katarina Zalar.

About the artists

Vala T. Foltyn, performance artist, queer witch, art researcher, and founder of Lamella the house of queer arts in Poland. She graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Artistic Research at Malmö Art Academy in June 2022.

Foltyn was an artist in residency at Art Hub Copenhagen and published the book "Szwedzka 8" in 2024. She exhibited and performed at Tallinn Art Hall, Fondazione Giuliani in Rome, Zachęta Gallery, Galeria Miejska Arsenał, Parliament of Bodies by Paul Preciado at Bergen Assembly and Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. She currently lives in Copenhagen.

Collaborators

Andreas Haglund (they/them + he/him) SE/DK - works as a freelance dancer, performer and choreographer. Their artistic practice centers on explorations of the somatic, material and aesthetic coherences between queer lived experience and the cultural conception of nature. On stage, in dance practice and in text. He is an active member of Dance Cooperative; a platform organised by 12 professional artists in Copenhagen. Through this framework he has facilitated several performance events, presenting both his own works and collaborations as well as hosting other artists and their works.

Katarina Zalar (she/her) is a Ljubljana-based costume and set designer active in various performance forms, including street, site-specific, dance, puppet, and classical theatre. She embraces DIY principles, values collective work, and practices meditation. A founding member of the LJUD group (2006–2019), she co-created major public space projects like Invasions and Streetwalker. Zalar has collaborated widely, contributing to over 110 costume and set designs and 25 co-authored projects. She was awarded the student Prešeren Prize for her thesis Electric Invasion and launched her debut project Hungrygry in 2022.

Sandy Harry Ceesay (he/they) is a Swedish-Gambian interdisciplinary artist, writer and curator. Central to their artistic inquiry is the exploration of identity, memory, marginalization, and power, often approached through a queer and decolonial lens. Originally graduating from Amsterdams University of the Arts as a dancer in 2020, their artistic practice has expanded to include several different mediums such as performance, painting, drawing, video and text. In 2022 they debuted with their first novel Kärlekens Exil (Love Exiled) with Albert Bonniers Förlag. They are currently working on their second novel, amongst other projects.
