The artistic work

At this FOCUS ON we put the spotlight on scenographers and invite you to come get an insight into their artistic practice and working methods. Maybe it will spark your inspiration? 

This FOCUS is the culmination of a residency-workshop where we have invited a group of scenographers with different background to come together and dig deeper into their craft – talk about their individual artistic practice and reflect on the artistic process; that is not tied to working towards a creation or a specific outcome. 

During 5 days the scenographers will gather to collectively pose questions that can generate new ways of thinking about their work, generate ideas, share feedback and exchange experiences. All this to open up a collegial space for scenographers to share practice, knowledge and artistic dreams. 

The idea behind this residency-workshop comes from a group of European light designers that regularly meet to talk about and develop their own artistic practice. With hosting a residency-workshop of this kind, the interested lies in giving space to some of the artistic practices within the performing arts that are often overlooked  – not the director, actors, choreographers or dancers etc.

About the artists

For this residency-workshop, we invited scenographers with different backgrounds within the field of scenography to explore the approach and methods of their craft.

Petruska Miehe-Renard is a visual artist based in Copenhagen. She graduated from The Royal Danish Academy School of Design, with a Master in Fashion in 2018. And have since 2020 been the visual part of How To Kill A Dog Studio with the Remeurt winning Lolita Forever theater performance and the Robert winning Tv-series Killjoy. In 2023 Petruska was granted Statens Kunstfonds Arbejdslegat and Lauritzen Fondens We Believe In You Prize.

Her work is often characterized with a maximalistic expression and a huge love for colors, details and humour.

Freya Sif Hestnes has a background in both scenography and fine art photography and work in the intersection between the two disciplines. Whether staging performances or creating stage designs, she integrates elements from visual art and photography. Likewise, when working on exhibitions, she applies scenographic principles of staging and spatial composition. 

She often works with video and projection, navigating a dialogue between physical materials and conceptual ideas in an intuitive process. Her projects - whether for exhibitions or performances - are always acts of staging, rooted in documentary or autobiographical realities. She is drawn to reality, reshaping and deconstructing it to reassemble it in new ways - offering fresh perspectives on our shared world.

Her set designs are organic and processual, typically integrating objects and materials to create temporary scenic tableaus. These often balance between beauty and the notion of something grotesque or repulsive.

She views visual elements as powerful tools of influence. She constantly questions their effect: Do they seduce? Is that the right approach? What impact does visual storytelling have on an audience? These questions drive her exploration of scenography, art, and their role in shaping perception.

Mia Frykholm is a Swedish-born architect based in Copenhagen, educated at the Royal Danish Academy, School of Architecture. Since graduating in 2016, she has worked at the intersection of architecture, art, and design - both under her own name and in collaboration with others. She has created installations for runway shows and major exhibitions for designer and artist Henrik Vibskov. Her work is highly contextual, focusing on spatial experience and the body's relation to space - always with a playful twist.

Her projects include exhibition design for The Irreplaceable Human at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (2023–2024) and Only for the Wicked for Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg at Borås Konstmuseum (2023). She has also created the scenography for The Wild Stage (2022) by Belgian Opera/Performance Collective Oester.

She has also created spatial installations for the DeTour, design festival in Hong Kong (2022). 

Benedikte Beate Hansen (she/her) is a scenographer working with set and costume design within theater, dance and opera based in Copenhagen. Her artistic practice uses ritual as a methodological framework and explores the scenographer in the role of facilitator. With a particular interest in the dramaturgy of objects and actions in space and the traces they leave behind, Benedikte Beate is concerned with thematic intersections between gender, work and the right to one's own body.

Peter Schultz graduated from The Danish National School of Performing Arts in 2012 and had his debut at Husets Teater with the performance George Kaplan. In recent seasons, he has designed sets for Idioten at Aarhus Theatre, Sat i Verden at the Royal Danish Theatre, the productions Vildanden and Høstsonaten at Aalborg Theatre, Erwartung / The Telephone, Die Weisse Rose and La Vox Humaine at Den Fynske Opera, At lære at dø at Mungo Park and 1984 and Elektra at Odense Theatre. Peter Schultz has previously been a house scenographer at Momentum Theatre and Odense Theatre. He has received the Reumert Jury's Special Prize for the performance ROCKY! at Husets Teater and a Reumert Award in the category Stage Design of the Year for the production Anne Sophie Hedvig at Odense Theatre.

Scenograher Petruska Miehe-Renard has been a valueable sparring partner in the creation of this residency-workshop.

About FOCUS ON

Sheds light on those of the performing arts disciplines that are not typically in focus.

FOCUS ON is a workshop meeting, a network and a knowledge-sharing format for the artistic disciplines in the performing arts that are not typically at the centre of attention, e.g. lighting design, sound design and scenography. The workshop aims to strengthen an artistic and professional exchange that gives these disciplines greater artistic independence. Each workshop will focus on a specific discipline. The ambition is to challenge the usual work hierarchies and inspire a greater degree of cross-disciplinary and collaborative processes.

The residency-workshop is supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, The Bikuben Foundation and The Municipality of Copenhagen.
